Wave VIII Research Findings

Methodology

For the first time the Opinion Leaders? Panel survey was conducted by telephone rather than face to face. The decision was taken to do this because of the high proportion of Panel members (newly recruited as part of Wave 7) who gave us their home or cell numbers: in total 83% of the full Panel members did so.

Wave VII Research Findings

Methodology

In total 2,540 adults living in Trinidad and Tobago were interviewed for Wave 7 and who further agreed to become members of the new Opinion Leaders’ Panel.

Wave 7 constitutes a new “baseline” in the Opinion Leaders’ Panel research series and is constituted of almost entirely fresh panel members. Wave VI Research Findings

Methodology

In the initial design of the Opinion Leaders' Panel, concern for panel 'wearout' and 'decay' suggested that after the baseline of 2,747 randomly sampled citizens were interviewed, subsequent Waves would target approximately one third of the participants on each occasion.

MORI therefore instructed HHB & Associates to select approximately 900 members of the panel as the 'universe' for each subsequent Wave. Random number selection was utilised for this exercise, and the field staff were instructed to contact these original panellists.

Wave V Research Findings

Methodology

For Wave 5, it was decided to return to the original Panel members in order to conduct a "baseline" survey. However, because of panel 'decay' it was necessary to recruit some new members to the Panel who had not previously taken part in any Opinion Leaders' Panel studies.

In total, 2,426 Panel members were interviewed, which was made up of 1,538 existing and 888 new members.

The new members were selected on the basis of the required demographic characteristics to bring the overall panel in line with the population characteristics of the 2000 census. This was determined with respect to race, gender, age and location (regional corporations).

Wave IV Research Findings

Methodology

Results are based on 710 face-to-face interviews with members of the Opinion Leaders' Panel of Trinidad and Tobago. The data are weighted to the known population profile, using the most up-to-date census data available.

Where results do not sum to 100, this may be due to multiple responses, computer rounding or the exclusion of don't knows/not stated.

The fieldwork was conducted 17 July to 6 August 2004 by HHB and Associates under the direction of MORI International.

Wave III Research Findings

Methodology

In December 2003, the third wave of the Opinion Leaders' Panel survey was conducted in Trinidad and Tobago. Wave III treated mainly with issues related to Trust, Police and Crime, Health, Education and the Board of Inland Revenue.

Since the baseline research of the Panel in 2002, more people are satisfied with key public services and, in general, feel these provide good value for money. In addition, Vision 2020 is becoming better known in the country and optimism that Trinidad and Tobago will become a developed country by the year 2020, is increasing.

Crime and fear of crime continue to be a cause for concern among the population. However, despite better-regarded public services, dissatisfaction with the Government has risen. Two areas of uneasiness are the state of the health service and the poor image of the police.
